Well put; I can only agree. Personally, I am quite passionate about the work I do on Help systems, and when I cannot do them professionally, I do them at home in my spare time, sitting comfortably at my computer in my shorts and confident in the knowledge that someday, long after I am gone, they will be discovered and ultimately be recognized as the staggering works of genius that they truly are. The help systems, that is. I think most of my cynicism as a sysadmin comes from the staggering quantity of truly awful IT management I’ve been exposed to. I read – and buy – books, study for exams outside what I’ve agreed to at work, and my colleagues just have to pick up the phone. Passion? Not quite that hot. Call it a heady mix of ego-preservation and knowledge that if I don’t do it, someone else’ll make it worse. |
